Nate's Baked Goods & Coffee, a new cozy coffee shop/bakery, is opening on the corner of 4th and Orchard streets, just west of North Lamar Boulevard, on Friday, March 3. Expect handmade pastries, breads, and light lunch offerings served alongside Cruiser Coffee espresso drinks, cappuccino, cold brew, and more. All the shop’s food will be handmade daily, made fresh each morning.

The owners Susan Shields and Nathan Baumann — a husband and wife duo — are both veterans of Italian restaurant Vespaio with more than a decade of experience in Austin’s restaurant scene, including running Di Lux Austin, a small catering business they launched in 2010. Selina Gonzales joins the team from Rosella Coffee in San Antonio and will oversee the coffee program and service team.

The food menu will include a daily rotating list of handmade pastries, muffins, cookies, brownies, cake cups, and sweet breads. Di Lux Super Buns — available in white with Plugra butter and honey glaze or cracked wheat — will be the featured bread for daily sandwiches, which will also be available for purchase by the dozen and half dozen. The shop will also sells custom-order cakes.

The lunch case will feature a grab-and-go salad option and two sandwiches (one of which will be vegetarian). The shop plans to add a daily soup in the coming months.

In addition to coffee, Nate's beverage menu will also include hot, iced and hibiscus cold teas, and bottled favorites like Buddha's Brew Kombucha and Topo Chico.

Shields and Baumann renovated the 1940s bungalow at 401 Orchard Street into the bright coffee shop, which includes an outdoor patio. Indoor seating is from Scott + Cooner interiors and the handmade custom wood counter and seating is thanks to Jordan Goetz of Austin-based Growler Domestics.

The shop is also working to create a partnership with its neighbor Austin Pets Alive. The idea is to reward volunteers with the Rufftail Runners dog walking program. Volunteers who walk the rescue dogs up to Nate’s would receive 50 percent off their drinks, plus there would be water bowls and treats for dogs.

The coffee shop will be open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Saturday.
