Rudy’s Country Store & Bar-B-Q, the barbecue and gas station chain, is taking over former greasy spoon EZ Brick Oven’s restaurant front on 40th Street and North Lamar. This marks the fifth Austin-area location for Rudy’s, set to open in spring 2018.

Much like the other locations, the Rosedale restaurant will serve smoked meats by weight (brisket, St. Louis-style ribs, sausage, turkey, pork loin, etc.), breakfast tacos, desserts, and sides like potato salad and cream corn.

The space will be designed by architect Morris Hoover and builder John King. It will make use of EZ’s old building, as well as the next-door structure.

Landlord Moton Crockett Jr. and his family picked Schiller and Nolen for the property amongst 14 other contenders. Crockett is also the landlord behind Threadgill’s South Austin location, which just renewed its lease for three years.

This expansion is being overseen by owners Ken Schiller and Brian Nolen, whose company K&N Management is behind the four other Austin-area Rudy’s, as well as Mighty Fine Burgers. They opened their first Rudy’s in Austin in 1994. Arnold Schwarzenegger is a fan of Rudy’s ribs.

EZ’s Brick Oven opened in 1994 and closed in 2016 after it experienced a fire. Before that, it was 2-J's Hamburgers.
