— Chefs Tyson Cole and Aaron Franklin teased some more details on their upcoming collaboration, Asian smokehouse Loro, to Texas Monthly, like smoked meats paired with sambal and a potential February 2018 opening date. It’s unclear if brisket ramen will make the menu at this point. Franklin also reiterated that he will never expand Franklin Barbecue.
— Texas’ favorite grocery chain HEB is donating $150,000 to the families of the victims of the Sutherland Springs, Texas shooting over the weekend. HEB and Central Market locations will also collect donations at all Texas registers.
— Barton Springs brewery Uncle Billy's is adding liquor to its production mix. The brewery is also welcoming a new head brewer with Stephen Wagner. The former head brewer Trevor Nearburg is opening his own brewpub, Beerburg Beer Werks, with chef Beth DiBaggio out near Jester King Brewery.
— Vice’s dedicated food vertical Munchies is celebrating its first cookbook, Munchies: Late Night Meals from the World’s Best Chefs with a panel and party featuring Austin chefs included in the book. This includes Callie Speer, Shion Aikawa, Tyson Cole, and Tien Ho. Frank will cook up hot dogs inspired by the chefs. It runs from 5 to 8 p.m. at Space 24 Twenty on the Drag. The $30 ticket comes with a copy of the book.
— Top Chef judge Gail Simmons shared her go-to Austin guide with Forbes, ahead of her appearance at the Texas Book Festival. For smoked meats, she goes to La Barbecue and Franklin Barbecue, tacos from Valentina’s Tex Mex BBQ, mezcal from Whisler’s, among other spots.
