East 6th Street is getting a new Italian sandwich shop with the debut of La Matta, opening on Monday, December 4. The counter-service restaurant accompanies impending Italian restaurant Il Brutto, which is set to open in early 2018.
La Matta’s main focuses are paninis and sandwiches, as well as salads and salumi boards. It’ll fashion mozzarella plates, which makes sense since executive chef Erind Halilaj was the corporate executive chef for Obicà Mozzarella Bar’s location in New York. As for drinks, the bar offers wine and beer on tap.
Halilaj will oversee both La Matta and Il Brutto. The restaurants are under the New Waterloo umbrella.
The Comal Street shop includes patio seating as well as a large television, which will screen soccer matches. Both restaurants are found on the ground floor of The Arnold, a mixed-use development which also includes Royal Blue Grocery.
La Matta was originally supposed to be called Enoteca Gattino, and positioned as a casual delicatessen and wine bar. The name “La Matta” stems from the word used for the Joker card in Sicilian playing cards. Il Brutto was formerly pegged as the upscale Gatto Nero, but the name was changed earlier this year.
La Matta’s daily hours are from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
