— Austin Towers got a look at the planned renovations for the historic Scholz Garten, under new food operators Frank. The changes are minor, like getting rid of some of the awnings, adding a stage, more bathrooms, and trees.
— Finalists for the Good Food Awards for 2018 were announced, and there is a whole bunch of Texas companies and products. This includes Round Rock Honey’s reserve bourbon barrel honey, Balcones Distilling’s Baby Blue whiskey, Strange Land Brewery’s scotch ale and IPA, Lox, Box, and Barrel/Celtic Seafare's cold smoked salmon. The winners will be announced on Friday, January 19.
— Houston Chronicle paid a visit to Valentina's Tex Mex BBQ, where writer J.C. Reid learned how pitmaster Miguel Vidal came up with the idea of blending the two cuisines with one trailer in the form of barbecue tacos. The new brick and mortar, which will open where the trailer is currently parked in Manchaca, Texas, is expected to open in January.
— Stiles Switch BBQ & Brew's famous "12 Days of Smoked Meats," where the barbecue joint doles out daily unique specials for the holidays (think chicken fried beef ribs, brisket tamales, smoked chicken and dumplings), is returning again this year. It will take place from Tuesday, December 5 through Sunday, December 17.
