Erin Russell is associate editor of Eater Austin, a native Austinite, and a big fan of carbs.

Even with the multitudes of poke restaurants that have opened in Austin recently, apparently there’s room for one more. In its first location outside California, Pokeatery is opening in the Mueller area at 1201 Barbara Jordan Boulevard in late October or early November.

In a drastic departure from other poke places around town, Pokeatery serves its creations in boxes instead of bowls. The menu is highly customizable, with bases (rice noodles, mixed greens, citrus kale, rice), proteins (tuna, octopus, salmon, tofu, etc.), toppings (nori, endamame), sides (crab salad), and sauces.

The restaurant also has pokecado toast (which is just poke on toast) and sweet Dole Whip floats (soft serve mixed with tropical juice). This is the first location that will serve alcohol, and owner Joann Chung plans to offer Hawaiian beers — including as an addition to Dole Whip floats.

Chung chose Austin for the first Pokeatery expansion because the city “is known for its great food scene full of open minded foodies who love trying different cuisines.” She mentioned the menu is still slightly in flux and may be adjusted after the opening.
