Austin City Limits Festival vendor Mighty Cone was apparently quite the hit with the headlining musical performers, fielding orders from both Jay Z and The Killers during the second weekend of the festival.
The rock band ordered a post-show snack of hot and crunchy shrimp cones (Jay Z opted for the chicken cones). The band ordered five, but Mighty Cone sent along extra for the crew, delivered after their set at around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday evening.
The Killers needed to stay fueled for their full schedule in Austin, which included a surprise show at The Continental Club and a rooftop performance downtown. Though they shared tastes in post-show refueling, The Killers did not follow Jay Z’s lead in ordering massive amounts of La Barbecue while in town, which the rapper had for lunch and dinner on both weekends.
The Mighty Cone trailer was originally created for ACL back in 2002, when organizers asked the now-shuttered Hudson’s on the Bend restaurant to help create a local food court at the festival. The restaurant added the popular breading from hot and crunchy trout to other proteins, creating a menu that has become a mainstay in the Austin food truck scene (that has outlasted the brick and mortar).
Mighty Cone, which has a permanent location on Barton Springs road and recently opened a trailer at Key Bar, gained new ownership this year with Stephen Tarleton.
