South Austin is getting a little cooler and sweeter when The Tasty Spoon, a new gelateria on South First Street, opens its doors in late February. The shop promises handcrafted Italian gelato made with fresh and locally sourced ingredients.
The menu will span a variety of flavors, offering a balance between seasonally inspired creations such as lavender honey and basil lime sorbet and traditional classics, like vanilla bean, chocolate, and sea salted caramel. Expect coffee and assorted espresso beverages, too.
Owner and Houston native Ashley MacDonald attended Carpigiani Gelato University in Bologna, Italy. and studied under some of the highest regarded gelato masters in the world before returning to Texas to open her gelato shop. The building was designed by McKinney York Architects, which is also responsible for Maggie Louise Confections, among others. The welcoming space is marked by warm wood and white subway tiles. Renovations were recently completed.
Right nearby Tasty Spoon is Dolce Neve Gelato, just a few blocks down on South First. It’s focusing on expanding into the Houston market very soon. Venezia Italian Gelato, which joined Austin’s gelato scene last spring, is just west on South Lamar Boulevard.
