A San Antonio police officer was suspended for deciding to grab some Whataburger instead of doing his job back in July. For choosing food over work, he was suspended for 30 days.
Office Gary Nel had arrived at the Whataburger near Northwest Loop 410 in San Antonio because a colleague needed help dealing with an inebriated person outside of the fast food restaurant. Nel decided that it was the perfect time to order a burger. News channel KENS 5 reported:
The incident report states that when Officer Nel arrived at the Whataburger, the manager asked him if he was there to assist with the intoxicated person outside. He responded no and said that he was there to eat.
As officers dealt with suspect Aaron Navarro, Nel sat in the back corner inside the restaurant, eating.
The officer outside had to call for backup because Nel wouldn't help, according to the suspension paperwork.
Nel later claimed that there were already two officers at the scene, and he just happened to be eating already.
