South Lamar is getting a new grocery store and restaurant with the opening of Delicious at Lamar Union this spring. Owner Raj Singh, who also runs neighborhood market and sandwich shop Live Oak Market in further South Austin, pictures the store as fulfilling the neighborhood’s needs.
To create the menu, chef Tyler Johnson of Micheladas Cafe and pastry chef Kyle McKinney, formerly of Barley Swine, joined the team. Available will be retail items like produce, pickled vegetables, cheese, beer, wine, housemade ice creams, and more, paired along with deli-style fare like sandwiches, salads, breakfasts, pastries, and more. "My vision is to display and create a ‘wow’ in almost every aspect," Singh told Eater. He’s particularly excited over the pastrami and brisket with jus.
Johnson and McKinney are hosting a breakfast pop-up at Metier on Saturday, April 2 starting at 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Update, April 2: The pop-up is cancelled. They will preview Delicious’ menu, including green chorizo kolaches and strawberry cornmeal shortcake. Check out the full menu below. Johnson previously worked as head chef of Bacon. McKinney was originally slated to become Geraldine’s executive pastry chef, but was replaced by Callie Speer.
Other future Lamar Union tenants include Lick Ice Creams’ relocation and Vox Table’s Mexican project. Already open are Alamo Drafthouse, Shake Shack, Vox Table, Cantine, and Caffe Medici. Delicious will be found in unit 1105 of the Lamar Union complex, opening sometime in late April or early May.
