While Michelle Obama was in town for her keynote panel during SXSW’s music portion yesterday, she also had the chance to try one of Austin’s best things: barbecue, specifically from Micklethwait Craft Meats. The 28-person order included brisket, pulled pork sandwiches, and moon pies. Scope out the full order below.
The First Lady and her staff enjoyed the barbecue to go on the plane ride back to the White House. The order was placed the day before on Tuesday, March 15. A Micklethwait staffer told Eater the team finished baking the pies at 4 a.m. Wednesday morning. The First Lady sent the barbecue trailer a bunch of White House swag, too. "As the saying goes, a clean plate is the best compliment to a cook," she said. "We didn't get the flash and buzz of a visit, but we got the clean plate! It's a gift."
Update, March 18: The staffer let Eater know that Obama and her staff "thoroughly enjoyed all the food you provided" and particularly enjoyed the brisket, grits, moon pie, and pecan pie.
Michelle's husband, President Barack Obama, went with Austin’s other favorite dish: tacos from Torchy’s Tacos. He’s already tried barbecue from the city with trips to Franklin Barbecue, and Stubb’s Bar-B-Que. Michelle Obama also dined at Salty Sow this week.
