South Lamar gets a brand new Mexican restaurant when El Burro opens this week on Tuesday, December 6. The Lamar Union eatery comes courtesy of Vox Table owner Vincent Manguino and the rest of team from the globally-inspired small plates spot.
Update, December 6: El Burro’s opening date is being pushed back to Thursday, December 8.
El Burro will serve up tacos, enchiladas, and fajitas with indulgent proteins like lobster tail and bacon-wrapped shrimp, alongside margaritas. Customers will be able to places orders online, too.
The anticipated restaurant includes a wraparound patio and open kitchen. It is found within the mixed-use development’s second building, which is home to Juice Society, Delicious, and Lick Ice Cream.
While in the midst of opening, grilled cheese trailer Burro Cheese Kitchen sent El Burro a cease and desist notice over the similar name. Its title stems from Nubian asses, forefathers of domesticated donkeys.
Originally, the South Lamar space was pegged for project from chef David Garrido, who currently oversees the Radisson Hotel's restaurant Dine. El Burro comes to Austin on the heels of Jacoby’s upscale Mexican restaurant Grizzelda’s, which debuted yesterday.
El Burro’s hours are from Sunday through Wednesday, 4 to 11 p.m., and until midnight Thursday through Saturday.
