Taco Bell Cantina, the fast food chain’s boozy-forward sibling, opens today on the Drag, with beer and alcoholic slushies, alongside the same quick and easy Tex Mex dishes.
The stars of the restaurant/bar’s show are the Twisted Freezes: essentially flavored slushies (Mountain Dew Baja Blast, Cantina Punch, and Margarita) mixed with single shots of local liquors, Tito’s Vodka, Treaty Oak Rum, or Tequila 512. Then there are beers, including local ones from Live Oak Brewery and (512) Brewing Company.
This upgraded Taco Bell is meant to appeal to Austin’s millennials. Aside from alcohol, customers can interact and place orders through digital kiosks. As is the trend, there are sharable dishes on the menu, and an open kitchen.
This Austin Taco Bell Cantina is the third of its kind in America, with the first out in Chicago, and the second, though sans-booze due to liquor permitting drama, in San Francisco. There are three more slated for Cleveland, Berkeley, and Las Vegas.
