It’s a ramen switcheroo: Michi Ramen is taking over the vacant former East Side King space at campus dive bar Hole in the Wall, as reported by the Chronicle. The noodle-soup focused branch of East Side King left the Drag spot last December due to raising rents. The bar was in danger of shutting down, but owner Will Tanner was able to renew the lease.
This will be Michi’s third Austin location, with the original restaurant, which opened on North Lamar in 2013, and the takeout-only one on South Lamar, which debuted last summer. There is no word on what format the Guadalupe store will take, or what will become of Peelander Yellow's colorful murals.
Update, February 9: It turns out the third spot will become a new concept, yet to be disclosed yet.
East Side King and the Thai Kun branch already has five locations throughout Austin: Liberty, Four Horsemen, South Lamar, Whisler's, and Steampunk Saloon. There's also the anticipated Thai Kun brick and mortar in the Domain's Rock Rose district, opening this winter.
