Fukumoto, the new izakaya and sushi restaurant from former Musashino chef Kazu Fukumoto, is getting close to opening in the Corazon Apartments on East 6th. Eater photographer Robert J. Lerma recently took a tour of the forthcoming Japanese eatery. The dining room, with custom Brazilian walnut furniture, features an open kitchen with views of the two yakitori grills. The bathrooms will be outfitted with bidets for everyone’s comfort. Fukumoto told Eater he plans on papering the walls with pinned daily specials, to make it look more casual. There will be an outdoor patio that’s currently being built in the back.

The menu will include yakitori, sushi, tempura, and more. Sake will be served from barrels found in Japan. Fukumoto should open by the end of August, but there’s no exact date yet. It’s the last new restaurant set for the East 6th apartment complex, along with neighbors Gelateria Gemelli, The Bee Grocery, and others. As a preview, Fukumoto held a pop-up dinner series at Qui in February.
