13-Year-Old Makes $50 Per Person for Waiting in Franklin Line

Desmond, the smart 13-year-old behind BBQ Fast Pass where clients hire him to wait in line for Franklin Barbecue , spoke to Bon Appetit today (along with his parents). He started the opportunistic enterprise in February because he wants to buy a car when he’s old enough to drive. Desmond’s parents, who allowed him to start Fast Pass this week because summer vacation starts tomorrow, promised to match whatever money he makes. There are three different options for the service, starting with the weekday-only silver package at $50 and ending with platinum on holiday weekends.

His routine consists of getting to Franklin at 7 a.m. Then he usually waits for about four to five hours. Homework, music, and Netflix keeps him busy, as well as chatting with others. "People are mellower once they start drinking," he said.

While he’s tried the barbecue at Franklin before, his dream order is:

I’ve never tried their pies. I would try all of them. I would get one pound of pork ribs, one pound of beef ribs, two pounds of turkey [...] two loaves of bread, three Coca-Colas…
