East Austin barbecue trailer and kolache masters Kerlin BBQ was named the best in the country in Johnny Fugitt's new book The 100 Best Barbecue Restaurants in America, according to Man Up Texas BBQ. The Missouri-born writer visited 365 restaurants in every state minus Hawaii and Alaska for a year. To finalize his rankings, he told Texas Monthly barbecue editor Daniel Vaughn in September that he "put together a rubric where I have so many points for meat, sides, sauces, service, price, and what I call ‘the barbecue it factor.’"

It was Kerlin's brisket that won him over, according to a press release. Franklin, Blue Ox (which is still looking for a new location), Freedmen's, Valentina's Tex-Mex, and Black's Barbecue in Lockhart also made the list. The book is now available for purchase.
