Wholly Cow Burgers will shutter their popular downtown location on February 28, according to owner Jeff Woodard. The restaurant has been forced to close to make room for the demolition and construction of a new Aloft/Element Hotel. While the hotel plans were well known, Woodard says the final notice to close came with little warning. In a press release, he says:
Even though we knew the demolition and development was inevitable once the building's historical status was changed, and the demolition application was approved by the prior City Council last year; we're all sadden that it came a short notice for our guests and staff.
The restaurant's original location at 3010 S. Lamar remains open. In a blog post, Woodard says the restaurant is looking at several other locations, including in downtown Austin, North Austin, and San Antonio. Wholly Cow serves burgers and cheesesteaks made with grass-fed beef, a health-conscious option especially popular with paleo dieters.
