A hospitality group known for large, high volume bars downtown has opened a tiny new project in East Austin. The Wheel is now open at the corner of East MLK and Chicon, according to a Facebook posting from their neighbor and food vendor Austin Daily Press. The oddly bicycle-themed bar (perhaps as hipster catnip?) will serve beer and liquor with the neighborhood's first late night hours. Owner FBR Management also operates Mean Eyed Cat, The Gibson, Star Bar and more.
The space was originally slated to become Motel, bartender Adam Bryan's neighborhood, walkable cocktail bar. Bryan obtained a change of use for the site, but was hamstrung by permitting delays, especially over minimum parking requirements.
