— HEB is opting out of the new open carry law, which will begin in Texas on New Year’s day. Customers will not be allowed to carry open handguns into the story, only concealed weapons may be permitted.

— The office building that will replace Austin Music Hall on Nueces Street, Third + Shoal, will include a restaurant.

Aaron Franklin and Olamaie’s Michael Fojtasek and Grae Nonas are repping Austin in Tasting Table’s chefs of the year list, though the publication incorrectly called the city a "puffy-taco town."

— Part of Thundercloud Subs on East Riverside Drive was damaged during a fire last week. A storage barn on the property caught on fire, which spread to the sandwich shop’s office at that location.

— Booze sales were very down last month.

— Even though Christmas is now over, Andrew Curren shared his favorite holiday dish: spinach ring with mushroom gravy.
