Pastry chef Callie Speer, known for her nostalgic mash-ups like "popcorn and a movie" at Swift's Attic, is joining forces with downtown bakery Delish. In addition to running the bakery, Speer will still create the desserts for both Swift's and Wu Chow. Delish is temporarily closed for renovations and menu changes "will remain small for now," according to a rep for the group. Lisa Matulis-Thomajan will remain the bakery's owner.
Speer joins a growing number of Austin pastry chefs striking out into the bakery world. Contigo's Kendall Menton recently joined Sugar Mama's as part of their East Austin expansion, and former Foreign & Domestic pastry chef Jodi Elliott plans to open bakery and dessert bar Bribery in 2015.
