President Barack Obama attended a fundraiser at filmmaker Robert Rodriguez's house last night, and the event was catered in part by Fresa's Chicken Al Carbon. Fresa's chef Rene Ortiz created a "refined" chicken fajita taco with jicama slaw, dubbed 'El Presidente', for the event. Pastry chef Laura Sawicki also developed two ice creams, a sweet corn with blueberry compote and a milk chocolate served with coconut cajeta and crushed-up Whoppers.
Rene Ortiz tells Eater the "taco and treats" were a hit. "He loved it," Ortiz says. "[Obama] ate two 'amazing' tacos - 'Well, really one and a half' - and each tasty treat." The Fresa's team created an 'El Presidente' seal, pictured above. The taco should be available at Fresa's within the next few weeks.
San Antonio chef Jason Dady also cooked for the president; Dady says in an Instagram posting, "Tonight our team cooked for the POTUS and I'm damn proud to say they crushed it." Host Robert Rodriguez also made pizzas for the event, which Ortiz says are "damn good."
