South Austin institution Maria's Taco Xpress is struggling now that "the hippies are dying out," owner Maria Corbalan tells The Statesman. They've recently added live music in the evenings to draw in more business, and Corbalan blames the downturn in business on Austin's restaurant boom:
In the last two or three years, Maria says she's lost 30 to 45 percent of her business, and "with the old hippies that are dying, plus another 5 percent." Maria attributes the trend to all of the competition the boom has created on South Lamar, and all over town.Writer John Kelso suggests Corbalan add something fancy like "barbacoa bourguignon" to attract "hipsters," which ignores hipsters' deep and abiding love of tacos and kitsch. Maria's is now open until midnight or 1 a.m., and will happily welcome old and new Austin residents alike with gargantuan open arms.
