Austin's Most Anticipated Openings, Spring/Summer 2014

The sun is shining, the patios are packed, and Texans are pooping on bluebonnets: must be spring in Austin. With the changing of the seasons comes a new crop of restaurant openings, as well as updates from a slew of in-process restaurants hit by permitting delays.

Hotly anticipated restaurants like Olamaie and Dai Due are planning to open in the next few months, and Terry Black's Barbecue has their fingers crossed. The summer will bring the Uchi team's latest project St. Philip, as well as East Austin fishmonger Monger's Market and Kitchen. Read on for the latest and greatest in anticipated openings, freshly updated for Spring 2014.

Major Players: Mike Black, Mark Black
The Situation: This new barbecue restaurant from the fourth generation of the famous Black barbecue family has hit the dreaded permitting delays, but should open this spring. After years of working behind the scenes at Black's Barbecue in Lockhart, Mike Black told Eater that he wanted to return to his grandfather's "old school" way of cooking. His twin brother Mark will join him in serving up pit-smoked meats and scratch sides. The restaurant is named after their father, Terry.

Neighborhood: Downtown

Major Players: Michael Fojtasek, Grae Nonas, Ben Hickerson
The Situation: This is Olamaie's third go-round on the anticipated opening list, and they recently tweeted they hope it will be their last. The chefs won hearts and stomachs around town with their pop-up dinners last fall. This southern food super group combines their experiences at Los Angeles's Son of a Gun and New York's Lincoln Ristorante to bring Austin high-end, playful southern cuisine.

Address: 7301 Burnet Road & the Village at Westlake
Major Players: Roberto Espinosa and Eric Wilkerson
The Situation: This beloved taco mini-chain is finally testing the expansion waters with two new locations. Both were scheduled to open in the 'first quarter' of 2014; Eater has yet to receive an update on their new opening dates.

Neighborhood: South Lamar

The Situation: This new Italian restaurant in the condos now surrounding The Broken Spoke will serve Neapolitan pizza and 'local' Italian cuisine. They're currently hiring.

Major Players: Stephen Shallcross, Mickie Spencer, Greg Randle
The Situation: A New Orleans diner with a mid-century modern feel is going into the old Arkie's space on East Cesar Chavez. Shallcross intends for the menu to be affordable and approachable, and designer Mickie Spencer makes pretty, pretty restaurants.

Neighborhood: South Austin
Address: 4208 Manchaca Road
Major Players: Jack Wilson
The Situation: Austin native Jack Wilson seeks to create a new community space for South Austin, with 24 taps, Stumptown Coffee, and a new Veracruz All Natural Trailer. His commitment to South Austin is no joke; he's hired much of the staff from the now-shuttered Flipnotics.

Neighborhood: Cherrywood
Address: 2406 Manor Road
Major Players: Jesse Griffiths, Tamara Mayfield
The Situation: Progress is well underway on this seven-year-old supper club and farmers' market vendor's a butcher shop and restaurant. Griffiths and Mayfield will maintain their hyper-local approach to seasonal Texan cooking. Expect lots of local beers, dairy, and other products as well. The latest estimate is mid-June for opening.

Major Players: Philip Speer, Tyson Cole
The Situation: Uchi pastry chef and director of culinary operations Philip Speer will helm this new casual restaurant focused on all things bakery. Speer previously told Eater that the project won't be Italian, but instead it will feature "dough as our canvas." He also previewed their pizza program. Speer tells Eater that "As with many openings, we are now looking at summer."

Neighborhood: East Cesar Chavez
Address: 2401 East Cesar Chavez
Major Players: Roberto San Miguel, Shane Stark
The Situation: Gulf fishmonger Roberto San Miguel is partnering with former Kenichi chef Shane Stark to bring local, fresh seafood to the east side. Fish will be available to take home, and the kitchen will feature rotating chalkboard specials for dining in as well. According to San Miguel, construction is moving along 'nicely,' and they're looking at a "mid-to-late summer" opening.

The Situation: The team behind the shuttered Hickory Street is headed north to open a New American restaurant and wine bar this summer. Per their Facebook page: "FORK & VINE's Dick Clark-designed finish out will feature a tasting room, high-top bar seating, and a beautiful patio overlooking Shoal Creek with a covered indoor-outdoor patio space connecting the interior spaces to the patio."

Major Players: Rene Ortiz, Laura Sawicki, Margaret Vera, Tracy Overath
The Situation: Rene Ortiz and Laura Sawicki are slated to open this neighborhood cafe and grocery in a former laundromat and convenience store in East Austin. The complex will also house Angry Bear, featuring Ortiz's take on Szechuan cuisine. Approachable food and lots of ice creams from Sawicki is primed to compliment a booming neighborhood, soon to be home to the new Holly Shores park. Sawicki recently told Eater the project's opening has been "pushed back" from summer, but could not provide a new date.

The Situation: While this list is mostly reserved for spring and summer openings, Eater also has an update on Jodi Elliott's Bribery. The bake shop and a dessert bar is now slated to open "later in the year." Elliott still has not confirmed a location.
