A Plywood Report on Sawyer & Co, Coming in May

Louisiana-inspired restaurant Sawyer & Co aims to preserve the diner charm of the former Arkie's Grill on East Cesar Chavez. The brainchild of Stephen Shallcross of Swoop House Events, designer Mickie Spencer, and wine expert Greg Randle, the restaurant will be a 'Southern Louisiana diner' with a full bar, focused on affordability. Shallcross was a longtime Arkie's fan, and jumped at the chance to buy the restaurant. He says:

Having been on the East Side for 13 years, I look forward to adding another affordable dining option, and extending the genuine hospitality that makes diners like Arkie's especially fun. In Austin you can drop $75 for two people and not get anything special. We want to be the place people can afford to eat once a week.
The team is building a large addition onto the back of the existing restaurant, and hope to create a "mid century" feel. Food offerings will include rotating blue plate specials, and the drinks will be "approachable" with boozy milkshakes and New Orleans cocktails. The restaurant is running test menus at Shallcross's dining club Supper Friends. The restaurant is slated to open in May.
