Fresa's Chicken al Carbon launches a new menu officially today, created by new chef/partner Rene Ortiz, with desserts by chef/partner Laura Sawicki. The biggest changes are in the taco department. Eater previously reported on the restaurant's $3.75 breakfast tacos; those prices have now dropped to $3.25, and several new options have been added. The lunch and dinner menu now also features tacos for $4.25. Options include "La Fresa" chicken taco, and the Robert-Rodriguez-inspired "El Rey" brisket taco.
These prices are at the high end of the Austin taco price index. Fresa's model combines two expensive propositions: local sourcing and scratch preparation, including of their tortillas. Notably organic and local-focused Tacodeli doesn't have a taco on their menu above $4, though they do not make their tortillas. Torchy's prices run between $3.50 and $4.75 for regular tacos, including a brisket taco for $4.25 on what is described as a "fresh corn tortilla."
