Alleged Drunk Driver Kills 2, Injures 23 Outside Mohawk

An alleged drunk driver attempting to avoid a traffic stop killed two and injured 23 when he barreled through the crowd outside the Mohawk last night, The Statesman reports. The driver, whose name has not yet been released, crashed through a barricade at 9th Street and sped down Red River, which was closed and full of pedestrians waiting to get into the Mohawk and other venues. Police Chief Art Acevedo tells The Statesman

The driver accelerated at a high rate of speed . . . and struck multiple pedestrians on Red River, which was closed to street traffic and was full of people lined up outside the Mohawk. He drove two blocks through the pedestrians and at 11th, he struck a moped with a man and woman, who both died at the scene
The driver was apprehended after an attempt to flee the scene and will be charged with "two counts of capital murder and 23 counts of aggravated assault with a vehicle."

Update: The Mohawk has cancelled all afternoon events and is "working together
with SXSW and city officials on next steps."
Update 2: The Statesman has confirmed the suspect's name is Rashad Charjuan Owens. The car he was driving was stolen.
