Virginia Wood at The Chronicle reports that former Mettle GM Daniel Brooks has left his position to open Licha's Cantina in the former Papi Tino's space. Claude Benayoun of Vespaio is Brooks's partner in the venture; before moving to Mettle, Brooks worked at Vespaio as well. Brooks tells Wood:
I left my last job working for someone else on New Year's Eve and began working on my own first restaurant on the first day of 2014. Mid-February looks like a realistic opening date for the new place because we aren't doing anything that requires permits.Licha's Cantina will focus on Mexico City-inspired fare, not unlike Papi Tino's. Brooks is the second high-profile departure from Mettle over the past few months; CultureMap reported that pastry chef Finney Walter also has moved on.
