Members Only: Is Chicken The Only True Club Option?

New, 2 comments

While members of the club sandwich sandwich club may agree that club sandwiches are delicious, they may disagree on one key component: do the only real club sandwiches of this world contain chicken, rather than turkey or other standard sandwich meats?

If you're a devotee of James Beard, chicken is the only way to go. Per Beard, the club:

... is one of the great sandwiches of all time and has swept its way around the world after an American beginning. Nowdays the sandwich is bastardized because it is usually made as a three-decker, which is not authentic (whoever started that horror should be forced to eat three-deckers three times a day the rest of his life), and nowadays practically everyone uses turkey and there's a vast difference between turkey and chicken where sandwiches are concerned.
But if practically everyone uses turkey, and practically all club sandwiches are delicious ... well, you'll just have to fight out in our chicken versus turkey poll, after the jump.

Regardless, we'll always have bacon.
