The Austin Chronicle has ditched its annual restaurant poll in favor of just straight up telling readers which restaurants are the city's best bets, rather than risking another victory for Pluckers Wing Bar as readers' pick for "Best American" restaurant. The new annual feature, organizable by location, price, cuisine or restaurant name, is called First Plates. Please allow Virginia B. Wood to explain:
Our goal was to come up with a list of the eateries that we felt had distinguished themselves by their contribution to the local dining scene over the past year and design a new way to recognize and present them to our readers. For a full list of all 133 recommended restaurants (chain-wise, all four separate East Side King locations are listed, while only the South First Street Torchy's trailer makes the list) click here to find the First Plates index.
And don't worry, Pluckers fans: you can still vote for your favorites in the weekly paper's "Best of Austin" annual awards, which foodie readers will find contains "many of their favorite award categories."
