Umami Mia Pizzeria, the new pizza-plus restaurant from a group of folks behind Austin Java, Lil' Woodrow's and Zen, among others, grandly opens on Barton Springs today in the former Romeo's location.
The space, including the bigass patio, has been freshened up and brightened with a new primary color scheme, a revamped interior and transit-themed decor based on the Rome metro.
Food bloggers got a preview of the menu last week, and responses to chef George Thomas' menu are mixed. Peter Tsai at the Tasting Buds calls the mushroom pizza an "umami bomb," finds a "light and delicious" pasta carbonara and deems the roasted peppers & coppa appetizer his favorite of the evening. Over at Mad Betty, Kristin Sheppard also loved the coppa appetizer, but overall is more critical, describing the space as feeling "like the Google offices," found the mushroom pizza flavors overwhelming and the Mexican pizza "just ? not good."
Umami Mia Pizzeria is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to midnight.
