Respectable out-of-town chains opening in Austin: approaching trend status? Memphis-based Gus's Fried Chicken, so good that tipsters tell us it inspires fist fights over stolen bites, will open its first Texas location in the former Mongolian Grille space on San Jacinto Boulevard downtown. Reports the Austin Business Journal:
Gus's and local manager Robert Blodgett have leased their downtown location and are renovating the space. [Gus's rep Wendy] McCrory estimated that the restaurant would be opening in three to four months. They'll be hiring about 30 people. The Austin Gus's is the chain's second location outside of Tennessee, but McCrory tells the ABJ, "We're not looking to have one on every corner. We're looking to keep it a destination."
