W Hotel "libationist" Joyce Garrison will challenge her mentor, David "Tipsy Texan" Alan to a "Cocktail-Off" this Tuesday, April 2nd, at the swanky downtown hotel. The occasion? Garrison and Alan are on the April covers of L Style and G Style, a "luxury lifestyle magazine that profiles lesbian and gay leaders and their straight allies."
On Tuesday, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., each bartender will be raising money for the charity of her or his choice, with Garrison pouring drinks for the Grace Foundation, which benefits homeless young adults, and Alan serving for the U.S. Bartender's Guild.
Here's L Style on Garrison, a secret improv comedy enthusiast:
Forget about calling Garrison a hoity-toity mixologist. She's exactly what you want your bartender to be: chatty, bubbly, and easygoing. She'll also make you laugh, delivering quirky punch lines. Many Austinites agree she is one of the best, nominating her to be on the Austin Chronicle's Best Mixologist list every year since 2008.And G Style on Alan, an Eagle Scout:
For now, Alan is focusing on his book debut on June 11 but hopes to open his own bar in the near future. So far, his career has changed in many unexpected ways. He can't wait to see how it will evolve in the coming years. "There's a lot more to the bar industry than meets the eye. We may look like booze-drinking party animals, which is kind of true," he said with a laugh, "but it's a lot deeper than that. We take what we do seriously."The "Epic Cocktail-Off" is this Tuesday, April 2nd, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the W's Living Room bar.
