The decades-old Rabbit's Lounge on East Sixth Street officially shuttered last fall, and now the space is set to be revived with an infusion of new, Rainey Street-filtered blood. The Scrumptious Chef blog reports that Scranton Twohey, a veteran of Bridget Dunlap's downtown flagship bar Lustre Pearl, will take over the Rabbit's space, opening a bar called Whistler's:
The work crew has gutted the old lounge to install a long Pecan wood bar and a variety of antique iron fixtures. The eastern exposure will feature retractable garage doors in the time honored ice house format. Tap beer, bottled beer and cocktails will fuel the revelry downstairs while the upper level will serve as offices. If you never went to the original Rabbit's, you can watch Rosalio "Rabbit" Durantalk about his iconic East Austin dive here.
