Austin: where permits and politics can turn a spring 2012 restaurant opening into a June 2013 fingers-crossed. Vino Vino owner Jeff Courington announced plans for a new Italian trattoria, Al Fico, back in late 2011, but the restaurant has just now secured a building permit.
Via a very excited blog announcement: "We are thrilled to share the news that Al Fico has FINALLY obtained its building permit from the City of Austin. Demolition and construction has officially begun!"
They're remodeling an office building at 1700 East Second Street at Chalmers for the restaurant; it was originally a chapel and later a soup kitchen after World War I. Courington has said the trattoria is intended to be an "homage to the way things were in a slower time and a slower age."
