The group behind Uchi has announced today that they are launching a new concept, St. Philip, in Sunset Valley this summer. Named for the patron saint of pastry chefs and bakers, the restaurant will be "part pizza parlor, part bakery and part culinary workshop." Philip Speer (get it?), Executive Pastry Chef and Director of Culinary Operations for the group, will helm the project. Per the press release, Speer says the restaurant will feature:
Nostalgic food. Great housemade breads and sandwiches, pizzas, exciting shared plates and of course, great desserts.
The space was previously home to Cannoli Joe's, a not-a-chain but chain-seeming Italian restaurant that shuttered last January. Check out the full press release below.
The Group Behind Uchi Restaurants to Launch New Concept, St. Philip, in South Austin in 2014New Restaurant menu will Feature Pizza, Sandwiches, Seasonal Shared Plates and Baked Goods
December 10, 2013 (Austin, TX) – The group behind Uchi restaurants announced today that it is launching a new concept, St. Philip, on South Lamar in the small municipality within Austin known as Sunset Valley in the summer of 2014. St. Philip, named for the Patron Saint of Pastry Chefs and Bakers, will be part pizza parlor, part bakery and part culinary workshop, where guests can dine in or take out from the adjoining bakeshop.
Philip Speer, Executive Pastry Chef and Director of Culinary Operations for the group, will helm the project along with other key personnel from the Uchi management team including Uchi Co-founder Daryl Kunik, Uchi President John Baydale, and Leo Barrera, Uchiko Managing Partner. Uchi Chef and Owner Tyson Cole, is a partner and collaborator in the project.
So well known for their celebrated Japanese inspired menus at Uchi and Uchiko, St. Philip is an exciting opportunity for the team to express themselves in new areas.
"This is really a passion project for us. The idea of a place where we can riff on classics and the things we all grew up with. Nostalgic food. Great housemade breads and sandwiches, pizzas, exciting shared plates and of course, great desserts" says Philip Speer.
St. Philip will offer wine and beer and will be open for lunch, brunch and dinner.
"This project is a really exciting evolution for us," says partner Kunik, "our hope is that St. Philip becomes a neighborhood fixture where you can bring the family, meet a friend for lunch or stop by to get a sandwich or dessert to go."
