Texas Monthly's Pat Sharpe has named Salty Sow and Elizabeth Street Cafe Austin's best new restaurants of 2012, with runners-up Clark's Oyster Bar and Lenoir. She also looks back at what the dining scene was like 40 years ago, noting that it wasn't until 1970 that restaurants here could sell liquor by the drink. Back then, the hot spots were: Green Pastures, the Barn ("steaks and giant blocks of Swiss cheese"), Old Pecan Street International Café and the Capital Oyster Company, "where people table-hopped till the wee hours."
