An historic West Campus building at 24th Street and San Gabriel will open soon as Freedmen's bar and barbecue restaurant. The building dates from the 1860's, and the owners are renovating the interior with a classy wood-paneled bar, actual vintage lighting and historic African-American memorabilia.
Cain and Abel's, this place ain't.
The owners are calling it "Austin's Oldest Newest Bar," and per a post on ChowHound, it looks like they're "slated for a September opening."
