It would be fair to say that Austin chef Paul Qui is having a moment--after all, he's at the helm of Uchiko, one of our city's best-respected and innovative restaurants, he just won Top Chef and he's a finalist in the James Beard Awards' best chef, Southwest division.
But tomorrow, he'll be having more than a moment. He'll be having a day. A whole Paul Qui Day! Late this afternoon, Mayor Lee Leffingwell and the city council will present Qui with an official fancy certificate proclaiming April 6th Paul Qui Day in Austin, and there will be much good will and hand-shaking.
When Eater Austin asked Qui how he felt about the honor, and he said, "It's cool. I did not expect that at all."
So, is Qui doing anything special to celebrate 24 hours of Qui-tasticness? In his signature humble fashion, he demurs: "Probably not. I guess I should eat some sea urchin."
