Brewer Challenges Restaurants To Carry Less Crappy Beer

New, 3 comments

Scott Metzger, the owner of San Antonio's Freetail Brewing Company, has challenged San Antonio restaurants to give patrons better beer options. As he tells Texas Public Radio, "The goal is to get all of San Antonio’s top restaurants to smartly feature craft beer the same way they would feature wine."

Metzger's specifically targeted noted Alamo City restaurateur and James Beard-nominated chef Jason Dady, who owns The Lodge, Tre Trattoria, Bon 555 and Two Bros. Barbecue Market by calling him out for subpar beer selections on Twitter. Dady tells TPR he's "not much of a beer guy," and doesn't think his patrons really want what Metzger is asking for, but you know, whatever, why not give it a shot:

“I understand what Scott wants to do, but when you step back from the business-owner side, are the demographics here in Alamo Heights looking to come in and order a beer? It’s just not the case. So it’s kind of a Catch-22 in a sense that we want to really take seriously what he’s trying to do, but we also have to be true what our customers want.”
Metzger is now working with Dady's management teams to develop new beer selections, which means they may eventually make Metzger's his "Scott Approved" list of restaurants whose offerings meet his criteria. So far there are just nine restaurants that pass muster in the whole of San Antonio.
