South First Street isn't the only place the team from La Condesa is looking to expand: chef Rene Ortiz and owner Jesse Herman are opening a second location of their Second Street restaurant in the Napa Valley. We talked to Herman about the new space, who told us that they're looking to open sometime in July.
Ortiz will be the executive chef at both restaurants, while the former sous chef, Rob Peterson, at the Austin La Condesa will move into the Chef de Cuisine position in Napa. Herman said that while the spirit of the two restaurants would be the same (modern, Mexico City-style food), they will not be "cookie cutters" of each other and that the focus on local ingredients means the Napa location will be able to play around with new dishes. Also, they're going to send Austin chefs over to train with these new ingredients; after all, as Herman says, it's "a good time to get out of the heat."
Eater SF has information on the more than 100 types of tequila that will be on offer, the wines, the design, and more.
