The Cottage Food Law, for Tamale Ladies and Bake Sales

New, 1 comment

Houston food writer Robb Walsh's cover story in The Houston Press (and coincidentally also the cover story for the Dallas Observer, guess times are tight?) explores the ongoing quest for the Texas Cottage Food Law.

Currently, so-called pirate bakers who cook out of their home kitchens, tamale ladies, farm stands and bake sales are all technically illegal, and with the state legislature in session, the fight to reverse that has amped up. One proponent even says the fight is "just like the citizens of Gonzales during the war with Mexico, an informal group united by a common goal." Also! One of the bakers featured in the story decorated a cookie to look like the cover of the HP.
