The Statesman reports today that Ron and Peggy Weiss, owners of Jeffrey's Restaurant for 36 years, have sold the establishment to Larry McGuire. McGuire and his hospitality group also own Lamberts Downtown Barbecue, Perla's Seafood and Oyster Bar, and the soon to open Elizabeth St. Cafe on South 1st.
Earlier this year there were rumors that the folks at Uchi were buying Jeffrey's, but this news shows that another king of Austin's restaurant scene has stepped in.
In August executive chef Deegan McClung and general manager and wife Kate Wallace McClung left Jeffrey's to pursue opportunities in New York City. Previous executive chefs have included David Garrido (now of Garrido's), Alma Alcocer-Thomas (now of the El Chile group), and Raymond Tatum (now of Three Little Pigs Trailer).
From the Statesman: "We are humbled and honored to get the chance," said McGuire, who first dined at Jeffrey's at age 10. "We aspire to be the best restaurant in Austin and one of the most comfortable."
Jeffrey's will remain open, as is, though March and re-open with a new menu and a remodel during the summer.
Ron and Peggy Weiss and operating partner Jeffrey Weinberger will retain small equity roles. They also operate Cipollina, Shoreline Grill, and the O's Cafes on the University of Texas Campus.
