Ed Gibson, a cider enthusiast from Bristol, England, has relocated to Austin, leaving his internationally acclaimed cider bar, The Apple. Today he announced the availability of Gold Top, his first cider produced from his new Austin Eastciders.
The first batch of Gold Top is available starting today at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar, followed by all other Alamo Drafthouses next week and various other Downtown and East Austin bars and stores soon.
Gibson, formerly a musician and graphic designer, was just drawn to the Live Music Capital of the World. On his move he says, "It's incredible to think that right here in Austin we may have the beginnings of a major epicenter in the renaissance in cider in America. The best US cider I have tasted to date was from Austin's very own Argus Cidery, who I can confidently say are making the best champagne-style cider in the world right now."
Austin Eastciders' first batch of Gold Top was produced in England before Gibson's departure, using 12 Texas apple varieties alongside more than 40 different vintage varieties. They are in negotiations over on East 6th and local production is scheduled to begin in the early part of 2012.
You can taste Gold Top for free at a series of sampling events over the coming months, first up is the E.A.S.T. (East Austin Studio Tour) Preview Night Afterparty followed by several free events across East Austin during E.A.S.T. itself.
