The historic Club 21 in Uhland (just outside of Kyle) burned to the ground Saturday night after a car crashed into the building. The 117-year-old bar was among the oldest in the state, and the dance hall, built in 1912, was considered by some to be the oldest continuously operating dance hall in Texas. (Gruene Hall in New Braunfels also has a claim to that title.) The building is a total loss and owner William Ilse does not plan to rebuild.
Club 21 was a legendary music venue and was used as the location in several music videos. It was also the location for the Coors Big Hair Contest commercials from the 1980s.
